Grades & Game: George Marshall Of Brooks Has A Perfect 4.0 GPA And Maintains His Position As One Of The Top Players In The Public League

Nobody’s perfect; at least that’s what they say.  Class of 2011 George Marshall of Brooks H.S. has done his best to put that notion to rest.  “Academics are important to me because without them you can’t get anywhere in life”, George says, “to play at the next level and stay eligible, you need academics.”  Staying focused in the classroom is not an easy task for anyone, let alone an athlete.  George has the bags under his eyes to prove it, “Usually I stay up to about 10 pm, but there are many times when I stayed up past midnight.”

George has a history of doing well in the classroom that dates back to his grammar school days at Beasley Academic Center, he credits his parents, “My parents play a big role in my academics.  They stressed good grades early on to make me responsible enough to maintain good grades without them being over my back, I know what they expect.”  In his 8th grade year while on the honor roll, he led the Beasley Bees’ basketball team to the final four in the city playoffs.

Along with his continued success in the classroom, George has solidified himself as one of the top players in the public league.  He has interest from DePaul, Northwestern, Marquette, Notre Dame, Illinois State, and Ball State.  Alongside talented teammates such as Mike Powell, Justin Rabb, and Keith and Kevin Gray, George led his Brooks squad to the Super-Sectional title game.  George looks at their super-sectional loss as a set back but is confident they will be back next year.

In the meantime George is working on getting better for next season.  He is competing on the travel circuit with the Illinois Warriors and is looking forward to facing some of the nation’s top competition. George explains that, “My goal is to get better and be the best player I can be, I also want to be in the top 25 nationally.”  He is the first to admit that his game is not as perfect as his GPA, but that realism and maturity shows why he is one of the best and BRIGHTEST the public league has to offer.
